Currents - [wip]#
Measuring currents has always been of interest for sailors and scientists, from the design of shipping routes to the understanding of oceanic processes through the associated water flow and turbulence. Knowledge of the oceanic currents is of primary importance to characterize the transport and mixing of water masses, heat, and matter, carbon, nutrients, particles, plastics, contaminants.

focus on ADCP performance#
The performances of acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCP) have been strongly improved by the use of wide band transmitted codes and adapted processing methods. The aim of this presentation is to give a general overview of the design of efficient transmitted codes for ADCPs and of the suitable processing methods for the return signals produced by these codes. The principe of the basic “covariance” method can be deduced from some physical considerations on phase noise origins and this basic “covariance” method can be extended. We show also that all methods can be considered as deriving from a “general method” deduced but not identical to the use of Woodward ambiguity functions. For a given ADCP, the choice of a code and a processing depends not only on theoretical performances but also on available bandwidth and computing power and obviously on the acceptable global cost of the device.
